Project Intern Elizabeth Kingdom gives us some information of the census data for Whitley…
As part of my internship, I have been analysing the census data for Whitley to gain a greater understanding of the people living in the area. I looked at general demographic statistics, such as sex, age structure and ethnic composition of the area. I have found that Whitley has a fairly young population, where 28.1% of residents are under the age of 18, and the majority of the population is between the ages of 30 and 60.
Since this project is focusing on the transport needs of Whitley, I thought I would share my findings in this blog that are relating to transport. When analysing the data for the distance residents travel to work, half of the workers travelled less than 5 km, with 30% travelling 2-5 km, and 20% travelling less than 2 km. I also looked at the modes of transport that were used to travel to work. I found that 37% of workers use a car or van, 9% use a bus, minibus or coach and 8% walked. I also analysed the car ownership in Whitley as this may be a good indicator of transport needs in the area. Within Whitley, almost half of residents own one car or van, 27% do not own a car or van and 20% own two cars or vans.
The Big Whitley Project is looking at improving the bus service in the area, so it would be interesting to see whether the percentage of workers travelling to work by bus increases as a result of this project. Also, since the majority of workers travel a short distance to work, an improved bus service may be really beneficial for their commute, as well as reducing car use. An improved bus service could be really advantageous to those who do not own a car, to facilitate shopping and trips into town as well as decreasing reliance on others for lifts.
Next week we will be attending the first set of background research meetings, so our post will focus heavily on that.
